Module 8: Lesson 2

Introduction to Density Estimation

This lesson introduces the basic concepts behind density estimation, including kernel density estimation. In addition, the violinplot, a one-dimensional visualizations that employs a kernel density estimate, is introduced.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • articulate the basic concepts behind density estimations,
  • generate a rug plot form one-dimensional data,
  • discuss the relationship between a histogram, a rug plot, and a KDE plot, and
  • generate a violin plot, and discuss how it is different than a box plot.

Time Estimate

Approximately 2 hours.

Activities

Video: Watch the Introduction to Density Estimation video.
